The short answer: most misleading health news is not outright false but exaggerated, usually by reporting risk in the most dramatic way and by treating a single early study as settled fact. A few habits - asking about absolute risk, checking the study type, and spotting hype words - let you read health stories far more critically.
Relative versus absolute risk
This is the single most useful idea, because it explains most alarming or exciting headlines. Say a study reports that a habit 'doubles your risk' of a disease. That is the relative risk, and it sounds frightening. But if the disease affects, say, 1 in 10,000 people, doubling it means 2 in 10,000 - a tiny absolute change dressed up as a big one.
Whenever you see a percentage increase or decrease in risk, ask: increase from what to what? A '50% higher risk' is meaningless without the baseline. Reputable reporting gives you both the relative and the absolute figures; hype gives you only the scarier relative one. The same trick works in reverse for good news: a treatment that 'cuts your risk by a third' has done little if the risk was negligible to begin with, and a great deal if it was high, so the headline number alone never tells you whether to care.
What kind of study was it?
Not all evidence is equal, and the type of study shapes what it can and cannot show. Two distinctions do most of the work:
- Observational studies watch groups of people and look for associations. They can show that two things go together, but not that one causes the other - there may be other explanations.
- Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) deliberately assign people to different groups, which lets them test cause and effect far more reliably.

Checking the source
When a story matters to you, go upstream. Reputable coverage names the journal and the researchers, and often links to the study. It is also worth asking who funded the research and who benefits from the claim: a study of a product paid for by its maker warrants extra scepticism. A calm approach
The aim is not to distrust all health news but to read it with proportion. Single studies rarely change what you should do; consistent findings over time do. When a headline urges you to start or stop something dramatic, treat it as a prompt to look closer, not to act immediately, and for anything affecting your own health, your GP or pharmacist is a better guide than a headline. This is especially true for anything you might buy or stop taking on the back of a story.
